Employers have been put on notice that they must abide by the labour laws and afford their staff a period of four consecutive hours for voting.
Residents will go to the polls on January 18th and the Labour Division said every worker, must be allowed time between 6 am and 6 pm.
“They should have four uninterrupted hours to exercise their franchise,”.
They said however that not every worker would require time off from work to vote.
“Further, workplaces mainly affected by the requirement to grant time off to vote are those that operate shifts that generally coincide with the voting period. For example, workers employed from 8 am to 5 pm would only have two voting hours ahead of their shift and one voting hour after their shift. This employer MUST therefore adjust the work day to allow workers four consecutive hours to vote, whether prior, during, or after the shift.
Please be guided accordingly,” the Labour Division stated.
