20 new prison officers to be trained

In its latest decision, the Cabinet announced that it will increase the number of officers at His Majesty’s Prison (HMP) to ensure better security and maintain a higher standard of prisoner-to-security-officer ratio.

To achieve this, the Cabinet has approved the training of 20 new officers to fill the vacancies created by retirements, resignations, and the growing need for better security measures.

Currently, there are over 205 men and 10 women imprisoned at HMP, including those who are on remand awaiting a trial date as well as those who have already been convicted of crimes.

In light of the recent change in laws governing cannabis possession, the prison population has seen a significant decline.

Moreover, the Cabinet believes that employment opportunities in the construction sector, especially for young males, have played a crucial role in reducing crime rates.

The Cabinet is of the opinion that employment opportunities have always been a contributing factor in controlling crime rates.
