Results from a recent Facebook poll to determine the most qualified candidate for the All Saints West constituency have shown that Regis Burton is the preferred choice over Lamin Newton.

Burton garnered a significant lead with 222 votes, compared to Newton’s 20 votes.

However, the current MP, Anthony Smith, received the most votes, 559.

The poll was unique as it allowed users to vote based on qualifications rather than party affiliations.

It was done in response to the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party’s (ABLP) decision to ratify Newton as their representative for the upcoming general elections, despite not receiving 50 percent of the votes in the primary.

Following the poll, the ABLP reportedly reversed their decision and will hold a run-off primary to determine the party’s official candidate for the constituency.

The primary was marked by confusion as no candidate secured an absolute majority of votes.

Newton received 157 votes, Burton received 142, and Arry Simon received 60.

According to the party’s rules, a run-off should have been held between the top two candidates to determine the caretaker for the constituency.

However, the party’s Chairman announced Newton as the caretaker, sparking an issue with Burton who reminded them in a letter about the rules.

It is rumored that a run-off election will take place between two candidates, Newton and Regis, in the upcoming executive election for the ABLP.

Although there has been no official announcement regarding this decision, sources suggest that it is highly likely.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has reportedly expressed his support for Newton in an unofficial capacity.

During his radio program on Saturday, he urged Newton to remain focused and determined despite the long and difficult road ahead.

Furthermore, it has been reported that Newton has declined to participate in any potential run-off, stating that he believes a win is a win, regardless of whether it is through a run-off or not.
