Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba are celebrating 30 years of diplomatic ties, and Prime Minister Gaston Browne has described the bonds between them as ‘unbreakable.’

During a cocktail reception at the Cuban Ambassador‘s official residence, both countries emphasized their principles of non-interference and respect for sovereignty.

The Cuban Ambassador, Sergio Manuel Matinez Gonzalez, thanked the government and people of Antigua and Barbuda for their unwavering support against the criminal and genocidal economic, financial, and commercial blockade of Cuba by the United States.

The Prime Minister also praised Cuba for its benevolence and global contribution despite its limited resources and problems.

He says Cuba has played a significant role in the development of Antigua and Barbuda, particularly in healthcare and education.

Their healthcare system has been supplemented in a significant way by Cuban doctors, nurses, and other specialists.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Cuba made a number of healthcare professionals available to Antigua and Barbuda when other countries banned medical supplies and equipment from leaving their shores.

It is believed that the Cubans’ presence helped save lives during their time in the country.

The reception was also attended by senior government officials, including the Governor General, Sir Rodney Williams

Williams expressed his gratitude to the Cuban government for its immense contributions to his country’s development.

Sir Rodney emphasized the strong bonds of friendship that exist between the two nations.

He praised Cuba’s assistance in building human capacity through education and healthcare personnel, which he noted has been instrumental in the progress and growth of many nations in the Caribbean, Africa, and other parts of the world.

The Governor General urged both countries to continue to work together in harmony to achieve human development at all levels, address common challenges, promote regional integration, and advance shared interests on the international stage.

Sir Rodney also acknowledged the new Cuban Ambassador, who has committed to expanding trade and economic development, exploring cultural exchanges, and enhancing bilateral cooperation that aligns with shared goals and aspirations.

He further expressed his appreciation for Cuba’s support and partnership in areas such as education, healthcare, and human capacity building, which have been invaluable to Antigua and Barbuda’s development.

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph, and other Cabinet ministers, the Leader of the Opposition, Jamale Pringle, members of the diplomatic corps, and other friends of Cuba were all in attendance

Overall, this celebration of friendship and cooperation between Antigua and Barbuda and Cuba is a shining example of how countries can come together to support each other, even in the face of adversity.
