Antigua PM and Bar Association Clash Over Judicial Criticism in Gun Crime Debate

The Antigua and Barbuda Bar Association (ABBA) has responded to Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s critique of the judiciary’s handling of bail and sentencing in gun-related cases.

ABBA emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust in the judiciary, warning that criticism from officials can undermine this confidence. The association stressed the necessity of separating powers between government branches to safeguard democracy and prevent abuse.

ABBA urged officials and citizens to verify facts before criticizing the judiciary, cautioning that uninformed criticism could disrupt the balance of power and threaten the rule of law.

In response, PM Browne defended his stance on social media. He argued for judicial accountability, especially given the current national security threat. Browne called for stricter sentences and an end to routine bail for gun crimes, accusing the judiciary of prioritizing legal arguments over public safety.

Former Police Commissioner Rawlston Pompey also weighed in, criticizing ABBA’s response as inadequate. He suggested the association should focus on addressing serious crimes and their impact rather than defending the judiciary. Pompey also called for better self-policing within the legal community.

This exchange highlights the tension between the government’s push for tougher measures against gun-related crimes and the legal community’s concerns about preserving judicial independence.

Experts emphasize the importance of separation of powers in a healthy democracy. This system of checks and balances prevents any single branch from having too much authority, thus protecting individual rights and promoting accountability.

Mr. Editor, havent we already exhausted this topic? Whats6on your agenda. The consensus is that the PM is spot on correct! Most people support the PML on this one. The very people who on a daily basis witness and/or experience our lame-duck judiciary at work. Regurgitating the same topic is a waste of time!
