LIAT 20 Makes Inaugural Flight to Dominica

As LIAT 20 made its grand approach to the Douglas Charles Airport in Dominica, the thunderous rhythm of African drums filled the air, greeting the flight with electric energy that set the stage for an unforgettable journey.

This marked the thrilling launch of LIAT 20’s anticipated scheduled flight to the captivating island of Dominica.

Having recently commenced operations, LIAT 20 has swiftly surged ahead, broadening its reach by incorporating new islands into its ever-growing itinerary.

The anticipation and buzz surrounding the airline’s expansion were palpable as officials from LIAT 20 embarked on a chartered flight from V.C Bird International Airport at noon to Dominica.

Just 25 minutes later, the aircraft touched down, carrying the team from LIAT 20, a host of media personnel, and other distinguished guests, all part of this momentous occasion.

The airline, the brainchild of Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne, will operate flights to Dominica three times a week.

Chief Executive Officer of the Discover Dominica Authority Marva Williams, said the country’s goal is to increase travel offerings and to ensure every visit to Dominica is memorable.

“We must acknowledge the benefits our partnership brings…by working together, we aim to raise Dominica’s standing as a top destination,” he said.

Chief Executive Officer of Dominica’s Air and Seaport Benoit Bardouille said the occasion is memorable as the country seeks to increase air access for travelers to and from Dominica.

“This expansion in flight connections is significant to our Caribbean and international market as we seek to increase visitation to Dominica. As you are well aware, Dominica is building its new international airport, which will be on stream by 2027 and we are hoping to ensure it brings many visitors to experience the gem of the Caribbean,” he said.

LIAT 20 will be making four flights a week to and from Dominica, to Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and St Kitts and Nevis.

Bardouille said that over the past few months, onward connections to other parts of the region have been “under tremendous stress,” and he hopes LIAT 20 will help solve that.

He said the issue of affordable travel and exceptional travel experience is also a concern from Dominica.

Director of Operations of LIAT 20 Authur Senhouse mentioned that during the collapse of LIAT 1974, the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, was unwavering in his determination to resurrect the airline.

“I am happy that we will be able to fill certain gaps that exist in this region…this is a timely venture”, he said.

Parliamentary Representative for Marigot Fidel Grant represented Dominica’s Tourism Minister Denise Charles, who was unavoidably absent.

“I am happy to be here to celebrate the rebirth of this airline. LIAT 20 represents a new chapter in Caribbean aviation, one that promises to strengthen regional integration, boost economic activities and provide a vital link for travelers around the island,” he said.

The return of LIAT, according to Grant, is not just a business venture but a symbol of collective commitment to growth and prospect to Caribbean tourism,” he said.

LIAT’s Kunle Ibrahim delivered the vote of thanks.

On August 6, LIAT 20  commenced operations with a flight operated by the majority shareholder, Air Peace.

LIAT 2020 is a joint venture between the government of Antigua & Barbuda and the Nigerian carrier.

During the launch, Prime Minister Gaston Browne of Antigua and Barbuda announced that the partnership with Air Peace will provide LIAT 2020 with at least seven aircraft, with plans for future expansion as travel demand increases.
