The services offered by the Medical Benefits Scheme (MBS) will be expanded to include the provision of prenatal vitamins for expecting mothers, following discussions at the Cabinet level.

Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff, Lionel Max Hurst, announced on Thursday that the goal is to ensure that pregnant women and their unborn children have access to essential nutrition. “One of the proposals from the Cabinet is to instruct the Medical Benefits Scheme to provide vitamins and minerals for pregnant mothers who cannot afford them, ensuring their infants are healthy at birth,” Hurst explained.

Health officials have emphasized the importance of prenatal vitamins, which are rich in folic acid, iron, and other vital nutrients, for both fetal development and the overall health of mothers and babies. “Nurses have informed us that mothers who lack sufficient vitamins and minerals during pregnancy risk having children with neurological problems. This program will particularly benefit low-income families who may struggle with the cost of these supplements,” Hurst added.

In addition to this, the government is taking further steps to support unemployed fathers by offering job training and resources. Hurst highlighted that the initiative aims to address the growing unemployment issue among fathers. The Cabinet will launch a comprehensive program that provides employment opportunities in beautification groups and other sectors.

“We believe that acquiring new skills will allow them to earn a sustainable income throughout their working lives, reducing the likelihood of turning to criminal activities to support their households,” Hurst stated.
