The case against Karim Edwards, accused of causing the death of an American University of Antigua (AUA) student by dangerous driving, faces further delays as it approaches its second anniversary in the legal system.

The latest postponement came last week when a ruling on a no-case submission, originally scheduled for September 11 and then rescheduled to September 19, was again deferred due to the absence of the defendant’s attorney.

This series of adjournments has left the case in a state of limbo, with committal proceedings yet to commence nearly two years after the tragic incident.

The case stems from a collision on October 23, 2022, when Edwards, an accountant in his late 40s, allegedly struck two AUA students crossing Friars Hill Road.

The incident had devastating consequences: Kenneth Mathew, 21, suffered severe brain trauma and passed away just over a week after the collision and Priyanjana Das, then 19, survived but sustained life-altering injuries, including the loss of her right arm, fractures to her left arm, and pelvic injuries.

Initially, Edwards faced a charge of dangerous driving. However, following Mathew’s death, prosecutors elevated the charge to ‘causing death by dangerous driving’.

Justice for the victims of the two aforementioned traffic “accidents”” and equally so for the two Medical students mowed down by an alleged drunk driver with ties to influential person(s) within the legal fraternity. I will be watching closely all the judicial tricks and gimmicks to try to allow Mr. Edwards to walk free of this serious charge.
