Gita Gardner, an Antiguan and Barbudan national, has been elected to represent the Group of Latin America and the Caribbean (GRULAC) on the Katowice Committee of Experts on the Impacts of the Implementation of Response Measures (KCI).

The KCI serves as an advisory body under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), focusing on providing technical support and guidance regarding the impacts of climate response measures.

“The committee’s primary mission is to assist countries, especially developing nations, in assessing and addressing the implications of climate policies, ensuring that the transition to a low-carbon economy is fair, inclusive, and sustainable,” according to the announcement.

Gardner, who currently heads the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Unit within the Department of Environment, will serve a four-year term on the committee. She also serves as the Accredited Entity Focal Point to the Green Climate Fund, a UNFCCC financial mechanism supporting developing countries’ climate initiatives.

In her new role, Gardner will join other experts in helping nations address climate policy implementation challenges, with particular emphasis on “the creation of quality jobs, workforce transitions, and economic diversification.”

The appointment positions Gardner to contribute to ensuring countries, particularly those with less economic resilience, can meet their climate commitments while maintaining development progress and social equity.
