$15M Earmarked for Airport Enhancement

Significant enhancements are on the horizon for the aviation sector, as announced by Charles Fernandez, the Minister responsible for that ministry.

He indicated that the government is prepared to invest over 15 million dollars into these ambitious upgrades.

In an interview with Antigua.news, Fernandez detailed that one of the primary focuses will be bolstering airport security. This will entail comprehensive upgrades and the expansion of CCTV camera coverage, coupled with advanced access control systems, all designed to create a safer environment for travelers.

Moreover, the airport will introduce a state-of-the-art Public Address system, which will be seamlessly integrated with the flight display system.

Alongside this, crucial enhancements to the fire safety measures will be implemented, including upgrades to the fire suppression systems, sprinkler systems, and fire extinguishers, ensuring the highest levels of safety for all airport operations.

In an exciting development for travelers, the government plans to construct a vibrant local food court in the new terminal, with an allocated budget of EC $3 million. Construction is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2025, providing an enticing array of dining options for passengers.

Additionally, Fernandez highlighted that a significant renovation of airport infrastructure is underway, with a particular emphasis on revitalizing the old terminal. This will include a comprehensive roof renovation project, backed by a budget of EC $2 million.

The contract for this project has already been awarded through the tender board, and construction is set to kick off in early 2025.

The plan also encompasses a substantial revitalization of cargo operations at the V.C. Bird International Airport (VCBIA), with an investment of $8 million. This initiative aims to redevelop cargo operations, tapping into a previously underutilized revenue source that positions the airport to capitalize on emerging opportunities.

Furthermore, improvements will extend to car rental services, with dedicated spaces for up to 15 companies. These enhancements will not only improve customer experience with designated seating areas but also streamline renter processing.

This project segment is progressing well, with completion anticipated in the first quarter of 2025.

Lastly, Fernandez announced that the Signature group will invest US $5 million in the reconstruction of the Fixed Base Operator (FBO) facilities, marking another significant step forward in enhancing the airport’s infrastructure and services.
