Medical Student Acquitted of Rape Charge

A medical student is working to rebuild his life after being acquitted of a rape charge. The judgment was handed down in the High Court last week. Justice Ann-Marie Smith presided over the case.

The 40-year-old man faced accusations of raping his 27-year-old classmate following an incident on August 1, 2023, at a residence in the northern part of the island.

After a three-week trial, the jury reached a majority verdict of not guilty on December 12, with only one of the nine jurors believing the man was guilty.

The prosecution presented approximately six witnesses to support their case, while the man chose not to call any witnesses but took the stand to testify for himself, ultimately persuading most of the jurors of his innocence.

Reports indicate that he and the alleged victim met at an event, leading to further communication via WhatsApp and phone.

It is claimed that she invited him over to study, and their friendship progressed to physical intimacy, with at least two sexual encounters taking place at her home.

However, it was after another encounter that the rape allegation was made, which led to police involvement. The man reportedly aimed to concentrate on his studies, while the victim desired a committed relationship.

His lawyer, Lawrence Daniels, mentioned that the allegation had severely disrupted the man’s life, preventing him from attending classes until the issue was resolved.
