Police arrested 56-year-old John Richardson of Perry Bay for robbing a tourist of a gold chain.

It was reported that a visitor was walking along the junction of Market and St. Mary’s Streets when the suspect snatched the jewelry from the man’s neck and ran.

A female traffic officer who was on duty saw what happened and gave chase. He was eventually apprehended and taken into custody.

The officer was reportedly assulted and beaten by the suspect during the process of subduing him. She was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The piece of jewelry was recovered by the police. The incident occurred around 9:45 am on Saturday, 28 December.
