Breakfast Now Being Served Under National School Meals Program

The Ministry of Education is proud to announce the launch of the breakfast component of the National School Meals Program, ensuring that over 1,500 students at public primary schools across Antigua and Barbuda will now receive nutritious breakfasts daily.

This milestone marks another significant step in the government’s ongoing commitment to the holistic development and well-being of our nation’s children.

This new initiative complements the existing school lunch program, which already provides meals to more than 4,000 students each day.

Together, these programs represent a comprehensive approach to addressing food insecurity, improving academic performance, and promoting healthier lifestyles for our students.

Minister of Education, the Hon. Daryll Matthew, expressed his enthusiasm for the program’s expansion, stating, “A child who begins the day with a balanced breakfast is better equipped to focus, learn, and thrive in the classroom. By adding breakfast to the National School Meals Program, we are making an investment not only in the health and well-being of our children but in the future of our nation.”

The breakfast program will feature nutritious options carefully designed to meet the dietary needs of young learners.
By prioritizing local produce and suppliers, the initiative will also support the agricultural sector and stimulate economic growth.

The Ministry extends its gratitude to the hardworking staff of the School Meals Division, parents, teachers, and community partners who have worked tirelessly to make this vision a reality.

This initiative underscores the government’s unwavering dedication to ensuring that no child starts their school day hungry, reinforcing our collective responsibility to nurture and empower the next generation.

  2. This warms my heart. I am a product of Antigua’s school system and I often attended school on an empty, rumbling stomach. Thank God these children will not have to face that and can instead focus on learning. Thank you to all who have made this possible.
