For the second year in a row, the United Progressive Party (UPP) has boycotted the annual V.C. Bird Day celebrations, an official national event organized by the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) government to honour the legacy of Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, the country’s first Prime Minister.

While government officials, dignitaries, and members of the Bird family gathered for the traditional wreath-laying ceremony on Lower All Saints Road, the UPP instead hosted its own private observance.

  1. And these are the people who wants to run our country? This is already having no respect for the man who built our nation decades ago. Pringle stood in parliament saying that the ABLP politicize everything but as the opposition leader, the mirror on the wall must have not been working! You should have been honoring the legacy of a man who layered the political foundation of your country but instead you’re out there trying to be bitter and seeking attention!

  2. Antigua has a day set aside for heroes day. Baldwin Spencer as former Prime Minister of our nation should have gone against Pringle in this decision. You should have been honoring the father of our nation but you chose to take a different part all because he was a Laborite? Hmm. Pringle oh Pringle! You’ll never be man enough to run our nation

  3. Every person that has contributed to nation building MUST be respected. The RT. HON. V. C. Bird made his contribution and he should be respected. With that said, the ABLP brings across the honouring of VC and his legacy like a cult following.

What the ABLP has done is to water down the importance of Hero’s Day, to observe one POLITICAL figure, and I disagree with it. The day should be a Hero’s Day, and every person that has contributed to nation building is recognised and celebrated

I hold no bias for our against either party. But this division over our this issue needs to be addressed and fixed.

The current ABLP appears to put more effort into decent 9,than what ever date they claim Hero’s day is on whatever date in November
