Minister of Education, Sports and Creative Industries, Daryll Matthew, has extended high praise to Antigua and Barbuda’s rising track star Tyra Fenton following her standout performance at the CARIFTA Games 2026.

Fenton delivered one of the most exciting moments of the championships when she captured gold in the Under-17 girls’ 100 metres final at the Kirani James Athletic Stadium. In a tightly contested race, the Antiguan sprinter crossed the line in 11.30 seconds, matching the time of The Bahamas’ Jazae Johnson. The result was ultimately decided by photo finish, with Fenton edging ahead to secure the top podium spot.

In a statement, Minister Matthew commended the young athlete’s discipline and determination, noting that her achievements represent a significant moment for the nation.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Sports, I extend sincere congratulations to Tyra Fenton on her exceptional performance at the CARIFTA Games. Opening her campaign with a bronze medal in the 400m and going on to capture gold in the Under-17 100m, Tyra has so far secured Antigua and Barbuda’s only two medals at the Games for Track and Field. This is a truly commendable achievement that speaks to her dedication and excellence. The nation is proud of you,” the Minister said.
