Minister of Sports Dwayne George has called for greater caution on the nation’s roads following the collision that left national cyclist Tahje Browne hospitalized on Saturday.

Browne was injured after being struck by a motorist while cycling along Sir Sydney Walling Highway. Security camera footage from the area reportedly shows an oncoming vehicle crossing into the cyclist’s path before the impact occurred. The driver later fled the scene.

The cyclist was transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where he remains under medical observation. Officials have indicated that his injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Reacting to the incident, George said the collision should serve as a reminder that road safety is everyone’s responsibility.

Today’s unfortunate incident involving cyclist Tahje Browne, who was struck by a motorist while on our roadways, serves as a sobering reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility,” the minister said in a statement.

George expressed his support for Browne and wished him a full and speedy recovery.

I wish Tahje Browne a speedy and full recovery and extend my thoughts and prayers to him and his family during this time,” he said.

The minister noted that motorists often become focused on reaching their destinations and can overlook the fact that roads are shared by a variety of users, including cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and other drivers.

He stressed that cyclists have every right to use the nation’s roadways and urged motorists to remain vigilant, obey traffic laws, and exercise patience behind the wheel.

Cyclists have a rightful place on our roads, just as motorists do. They are members of our communities, our families, and our nation. Their safety should never be compromised because of distraction, impatience, or negligence behind the wheel,” George stated.

The incident has reignited concerns about road safety and the protection of vulnerable road users, particularly cyclists who regularly share the roads with motor vehicles.

George also urged the public to view the incident as a call to action, encouraging drivers to slow down, pay attention, and act responsibly while traveling.

A few extra seconds of care and vigilance can save a life,” he said.

Police investigations into the collision are ongoing as authorities continue efforts to identify the driver involved.
