Antigua and Barbuda’s first Saharan Dust event of 2025 has prompted officials to issue a moderate air quality alert for the country, effective from Friday evening through Saturday night.
The air quality index is expected to range between 51 and 80, reaching Alert Level II due to increased levels of particulate matter 2.5 and 10 in the atmosphere.
While these conditions pose a low health risk for the general population, certain sensitive groups need to take precautions.
The met office has identified elderly individuals, children, and people with respiratory or heart conditions as those most vulnerable during this period.
While the air quality remains acceptable for most, those who are particularly sensitive to air pollution may experience moderate health concerns.
Authorities advise that active children and adults, especially those with respiratory conditions such as asthma, should limit extended outdoor activities during this period.
The advisory emphasizes that while the health implications are minimal for most residents, those in sensitive groups should monitor the situation and adjust their outdoor activities accordingly.
