Dear Editor
People warned us that the Prime Minister would never reply. Of course: “Birds of a feather flock together.”
We should not have expected the Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues to be separated in any way from their Attorney General and his cruel pranks.
They are as thick as a gang of thieves.
The sad irony is that they hold the legacy of a pollical movement rooted trade unionism – in fighting for the dispossessed, the oppressed, and the vulnerable.
But now, rather than leading the shouts of labourers in street protests they cower at the sermons of minority evangelical pastors. Our cowardly politicians genuflect. The tail is wagging the dog.
This is a new Birdland.
Mindless minority religious dogma has displaced any sense of social justice. Our politicians tremble in the face of pastors’ loud and empty assertions – however unkind, however unchristian, however immoral, however uninformed, however alien to reason, however hostile to women.
Let us be clear:
- At least twice, in 2020 and 2022, the AG said the criminal abortion law should be changed.
- We wrote to him and asked him to clarify the law. He did not reply.
- We approached the High Court to challenge the constitutionality of the law.
- Suddenly, he says the law was repealed in 1995 and asks the Court to dismiss our claim.
- The Court rejected his request.
- Now he challenges the Court’s decision and wants a new judge! (I don’t like your LBW decision, so I appeal to the square leg umpire!)
- We wrote an open appeal to the Prime Minister. He has joined his AG in ignoring us.
Be assured, Prime Minister, we are not going away.
If the criminal abortion law was indeed repealed in 1995:
(i) Why was the AG speaking about the need to change the law in 2020 and 2022?
(ii) Why does the AG not simply declare that abortion is now decriminalized in Antigua?
Meanwhile, day after day, while the AG fiddles with “due process”, poor women and young girls remain at risk of unsafe abortions.
Apparently, the ABLP no longer cares about women. Perhaps it never did.
We are pro-choice because we are pro-life.
Sincerely
ASPIRE

God’s word cannot be changed, never changes and will not change. In the sight of God, abortion is a sin, no matter what the crisis is, amen.
Let’s fix the abortion issue once and for all….Pass a law that mandates that all males of child bearing age have vasectomies to be reversed upon marriage.
