Missing Vessel FV MOYA. Photo Credit: Antigua Marina
The recent disappearance of the fishing vessel FV MOYA has prompted a heightened response from maritime authorities in Martinique and other neighboring territories, as efforts continue for the three missing fishermen.
As of February 22, the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) has been leading the search and rescue operation, but support has also been mobilized from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) based in Fort-de-France, Martinique.
The FV MOYA, a 30-foot vessel with fishermen Mathias Greenaway, Glenmore Matthew, and Clancy John on board, was due back to port on February 22 after departing from Market Wharf the previous day. Concerns grew when the vessel did not return as planned and communication was lost, prompting a coordinated search effort by various agencies.
The challenging conditions at sea, exacerbated by a high surf advisory in place since the preceding Friday, have made search operations particularly difficult. Despite this, authorities in Martinique remain committed to assisting with aerial and maritime support for the ongoing rescue mission.
Members of the public who may have any potential leads or information about the whereabouts of the FV MOYA are encouraged to reach out. They can contact Lieutenant (Naval) Trish Lake at 729-5802 or the Coast Guard hotline at 462-3206 / 462-2841/2/3.
The situation highlights the collaborative efforts among regional agencies to enhance maritime safety and the importance of adhering to safety regulations on the sea. The hope remains strong for the safe return of the crew and their families are in the thoughts of those involved in the search.
