Antigua and Barbuda has recently opened its embassy in Beijing, China, which is expected to further strengthen the already close relationship between the two countries.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene, who expressed his optimism and appreciation for the move.
According to him, the embassy will enable the government to enhance diplomatic engagements and foster effective economic and investment cooperation initiatives.
The embassy will also provide consular services to students and citizens while promoting more people-to-people exchanges.
Greene praised the People’s Republic of China’s approach to diplomacy, emphasizing its all-embracing way of engaging other countries as equal partners with a shared vision for the world.
He also acknowledged China’s many global initiatives designed to promote goodwill and cooperation among nations.
The Foreign Minister used the opportunity to pay tribute to the Father of the Nation, National Hero, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird, for his vision in being one of the first leaders to see China’s real potential and for moving swiftly to establish diplomatic relations with the PRC.
To honor his legacy, the embassy will create a V.C. Bird wall as a mark of respect and reverence for his vision, commitment, and desire to build a long-lasting relationship with the Chinese government and people.
Greene also expressed Antigua and Barbuda’s strong support for China’s Global Security Initiative, designed to provide a safe and stable environment for international relations, economic development, and global peace.
He noted that the Security and governance are under threat, and the GSI is an excellent initiative to address the issue. Additionally, Antigua and Barbuda remains committed to the ‘One China Policy’, recognizing the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of that country, and Taiwan as a part of China.
As members of multilateral institutions like the United Nations, Antigua and Barbuda will continue to collaborate with China on critical issues of mutual interest within the bilateral relations.
The government will also ensure that the principles enshrined within the charter of this august body are kept, ensuring peace and goodwill among the many nations of the globe.
