Former MP Arthur welcomes decision to have new airport as his namesake
By Abbigayle McIntosh
Former Barbudan Member of Parliament Arthur Nibbs has expressed his appreciation for the Cabinet of Antigua and Barbuda’s decision to name Barbuda’s new international airport in his honor.
The facility, set to open on October 3, will be called the Burton Nibbs International Airport, recognizing the contributions of both Nibbs and Sir Eric Burton.
However, a member of the Burton family has rejected the shared name, arguing that it does not sufficiently highlight the individual contributions of both men and suggesting the airport should be named solely after Nibbs.
Nibbs revealed that when initially contacted by the Prime Minister, he felt the dual naming might diminish his contribution.
“I’m just a straight shooter. My personal view is that it should have been named the Arthur Nibbs International Airport. Twinning it with Sir Eric Burton—I feel that if you’re going to honor me, it should be commensurate with what I’ve done,” Nibbs remarked.
Reflecting on the recognition, Nibbs said it is a testament to his dedication and hard work. “Hard work pays off. While you’re working, you’re not thinking about the rewards—you just do the work. I never imagined there would be an international airport in Barbuda, let alone one with my name on it,” he added.
Quite a deserving honour. Your contribution to the development of Barbuda and, by extension Antigua and Barbuda cannot be denied or underestimated. Shame on the “family” of Sir Eric Burton, who through shortsightedness and generational dunceness, have decided to throw the legacy of Sir Eric Burton into the dustbins of Antigua and Barbuda’s history. The wagon rolls on, however, as per the exhortation of the Hon. Vere Cornwall Bird, Father of the Nation.
Partner be for real, how can you say shame on Mr. Burton’s family when Mr. Nibbs stated that he felt the exact same way.?
What has Nibbs done for Barbuda? One of these days the politics will stop in this place
