Crime Spree Fears as Three Break-Ins Reported Within Days
Police are investigating three separate incidents of theft and breaking and entering reported in different parts of Antigua over the span of a week, with businesses in Fort Road, Belmont and All Saints all falling victim to criminal activity.
The incidents, which occurred between June 16 and June 19, have prompted ongoing investigations by law enforcement. Sources say investigators have already obtained useful information in at least one of the cases.
One of the incidents involved the theft of approximately EC$1,500 from an office at a commercial establishment on Fort Road.
Reports indicate that the money was left inside a drawer for less than an hour on the morning of June 19 while a staff member stepped away to an adjoining supermarket. When she returned between 9:00 a.m. and 9:50 a.m., the cash had disappeared.
Investigators have since interviewed several employees as part of their inquiries, and sources suggest that information gathered during those interviews could prove significant to the case.
In a separate matter, burglars targeted a building under construction in Belmont, making off with a power drill.
The theft is believed to have occurred sometime between midday on June 18 and 7:00 a.m. the following day. According to reports, the culprit forced open a deadbolt lock on a metal door before entering the premises and stealing the tool, which had been left on a table inside.
A subsequent search of the surrounding area failed to recover the missing drill, and its value has not yet been determined.
Meanwhile, a shop in All Saints was broken into sometime between the evening of June 16 and the morning of June 17.
Reports indicate that the intruder gained access by prying open a wooden shutter window. Once inside, a quantity of blunts along with alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages were stolen.
The perpetrator reportedly exited the building through a wooden door after carrying out the theft.
Police continue to investigate all three incidents and are appealing to anyone with information that may assist the investigations to contact the nearest police station.
