The evening was a true testament to the enduring friendship and cooperation between these two countries.
The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, stated that the country’s support for the One China Policy aligns with the position adopted by most countries around the world. He pointed out that China has a policy of ‘non-aggression,’ citing China’s decision not to invade Taiwan despite having the right to do so.
“You can see this policy of non-aggression with regard to its policy towards Taiwan, which is a province of China. You may ask if Antigua and Barbuda’s position of supporting the One China policy is correct and I will say ‘yes’ because we are standing on the principle of what is right as Taiwan has always been a part of China. That has not changed even though it’s a breakaway province of China.,” he said
Prime Minister Browne compared the situation with Taiwan to what would happen if the island of Barbuda were to separate from Antigua.
He explained that just as Antigua and Barbuda are considered one nation, China sees Taiwan as part of its territory. This is why he emphasized his support for China’s One China Policy.
“For those of you here who do not quite understand the One China Principle, it would be the same should Barbuda breakaway from Antigua and declared its independent; we would say this is a unitary state, one Antigua and Barbuda. There’s no difference in terms of the relationship between the PRC and Taiwan. That is why we continue to support the sustaining principle of One China Policy,” according to Browne.
Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Minister E.P Chet Greene emphasized China’s significant economic growth over the past decades.
He highlighted China’s efforts in poverty alleviation and its contributions to the development of states such as Antigua and Barbuda. Greene also underscored China’s growing influence in global economies and its potential to address pressing global issues such as trade, investment, aging populations, healthcare systems, and sustainable energy.
He also expressed appreciation for the mutually beneficial bilateral and multilateral cooperation engagements between the two countries.
In closing, Greene commended China’s rich cultural heritage, remarkable progress, and global contributions as the People’s Republic of China celebrated its National Day in 2024.
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams was also present at last evening’s ceremony, reminding those gathered that Antigua and Barbuda has consistently upheld the One China Policy, which recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China.
“This alignment in our diplomatic values, has only strengthened the ties between our two countries, allowing our collaboration to deepen and produce tangible benefits for both nations. China’s modernization over recent decades has not only transformed its own society but has also brought immense benefits to Antigua and Barbuda,” he said
There were also other form of entertainment, musical renditions, Chinese cuisine and gifts. The gala went until late in the evening.
