In an effort to improve the experience for cruise ship passengers arriving at Heritage Quay and the expanded St. John’s Port facilities, the Cabinet has welcomed a delegation from Global Ports Holding (GPH) to present their strategic plans for a more orderly and welcoming environment.

During the meeting, GPH officials showcased a video highlighting a serious concern: a recent altercation between taxi drivers that unfolded in front of cruise passengers.

The footage illustrated the chaotic scene that has become a growing issue at the port, where unauthorized drivers attempt to lure tourists away from legitimate transport options, often mimicking the attire of licensed taxi operators.

The situation has led to a disorganized environment, with drivers creating a barrier for visitors disembarking from the vessels. Shouting and aggressive marketing tactics have left passengers feeling overwhelmed and confused.

In light of these challenges, GPH has initiated consultations with key stakeholders, including local police, shop owners, vendors, and taxi drivers, aiming to transform the port’s welcome into a friendlier experience.

The proposed plans, set to be finalized and implemented within weeks, aim to streamline the transfer process from cruise ships to transportation options, walking tours, and local shops, ensuring that tourists can engage without the distress of navigating a disordered environment.
