Vonde Bowers

17-year-old cricketer Vonde Bowers, who was tragically stabbed on July 29, is expected to be buried today, September 25. The funeral service is reported to be held at the Seventh-day Adventist Church on Valley Road in St. John’s, followed by internment.

Vonde Bowers, a student of Ottos Comprehensive School and rising star in the local cricket scene, was fatally attacked in the Gray’s Farm area.

He succumbed to multiple stab wounds after being discovered by passersby and transported to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead.

News of the burial comes amid sustained public grief and calls for greater protection of youth in communities plagued by violence.

In late August, a candlelight vigil was held in Gray’s Farm, where hundreds of residents, friends, and cricket colleagues gathered to mourn his untimely passing.

During the vigil, tributes poured in for Bowers, who was remembered for his gentle spirit, athletic promise, and dedication. His father addressed the gathering, speaking through tears but affirming a faith that “God knew best.”

Local cricket coaches also praised him as fearless and quick to learn, recalling how he had earned a spot on the national under-19 cricket team during a UK tour.

The Antigua and Barbuda Cricket Association expressed deep sorrow at his death, lamenting what might have been. Bowers had recently returned from a tour with the under-19 squad and had played in parish and school league competitions.

In the wake of the tragedy, community leaders and citizens have renewed calls for stronger youth protection initiatives and more effective policing.

The brutal nature of Bowers’ death has reignited concern over escalating violence in neighborhoods like Gray’s Farm and Hatton.

Authorities have confirmed that a 16-year-old from the Hatton community was arrested and charged in connection with the murder.

As the burial proceeds today, many hope the gravely sad occasion will also serve as a moment of reflection and a catalyst for change.
