WATCH: PM Browne Clarifies: only the Prime Minister can authorize duty-free concessions

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has made it clear that only the Prime Minister has the authority to approve duty-free concessions, explaining that the system was deliberately structured this way to prevent abuse, favoritism, and irregular approvals.

Browne said the initiative was born out of economic necessity, not luxury, and to ensure that the working-class residents, especially low-income earners and single parents, struggle to afford vehicles at current market prices.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Browne said the decision to centralize the approval process under his office was taken to ensure full oversight, accountability, and uniform application of policy across all ministries and departments.

  2. That’s a good move. Too many people were getting concessions through backdoor connections before. Keep it fair.

  3. Duty-free concessions should help the poor, not the well-connected. If the PM is serious about that, it’s a step in the right direction.

  4. PM had to take away the stamp from two ministers because they were too generous? Oh they were guiding duty free and getting paid something on the side? Antigua is very small. We know!!!

  5. Interesting clarification, but shouldn’t that kind of approval process be more transparent? Too much power in one hand always leaves room for abuse.
